About LiDAR

Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) is a technology that utilizes lasers to measure the distance from an airborne sensor (such as an airplane) to points on the ground. This creates an accurate 3-dimensional representation of the earth's surface.

LiDAR goes beyond traditional bare earth digital elevation models (DEMs) by producing point cloud information that can be classified into existing features such as vegetation and man-made structures.

Summary of Data

In partnership with the Texas Water Development Board (TWDB)/Texas Natural Resource Information Systems (TNIRS), and the San Antonio River Authority (SARA), LiDAR data was acquired between March 2010 and November 2011. The acquisition covered approximately 1,870 square miles and incorporates all of Bexar County, TX with small overlapping coverage of Bandera, Kendall, Comal, Guadalupe, Wilson, Atascosa, and Medina Counties.

The LiDAR data was captured with the intention of supporting FEMA mapping projects. The deliverables include the following products:

  • LAS (includes x, y, return, intensity, elevation parameters)
  • Contours (currently unavailable)
  • Intensity Images (1 meter)
  • DEM (1 meter)
  • First Return Surface Model (1 meter)
  • Hydro Enforced Breaklines (water bodies > 2 acres)
  • Raw Data (unprocessed LAS files)
  • Project Metadata
  • Tile Index

LiDAR Data

For the LiDAR dataset, please fill out the form below. The LiDAR data will be copied onto a new external hard drive. The total cost will be $375; you will be notified by email or phone when the data is ready to be picked up or when the drive has been shipped. We are only accepting company checks payable to: San Antonio River Authority.

For pickup:

Payment will be required upon pickup; you will be provided with an invoice of your purchase.
